Our 5-day journey from Fes to Marrakech. Begins with a picturesque drive through the Middle Atlas Mountains, reaching Ifrane. Often referred to as the “Switzerland of Morocco” due to its resemblance to a Swiss ski resort. Next, we venture to the enchanting cedar forest, home to Barbary monkeys, where we’ll have the opportunity to interact with them and capture memorable photographs. Continuing our southward journey, we pass through Berber villages, picturesque countryside, and witness nomadic shepherds tending to their flocks across the terrain. In Midelt, we take a break for a delicious lunch before proceeding through the Talghmt pass, providing stunning panoramic views of the hidden oasis of Ziz Valley with its palm trees and mud villages. Finally, after a drive of approximately one hour, we reach the Sahara desert in the late afternoon, where we settle in for dinner and overnight accommodation in a hotel.
After breakfast, we embark on a half-day desert excursion in the Sahara. Our first stop is to visit nomads residing in tents amidst the vastness of the desert. Offering us a glimpse into their unique way of life as we share a cup of tea with them. We then continue our journey to explore old mines once exploited by the French. Next, we visit the village of Khamlia, home to the Berber people whose lineage traces back to Sudan and Mali. Here, we have the opportunity to listen to their captivating Gnaoua music and savor a delicious lunch in the village.
Before commencing our camel ride, we pause to admire an oasis situated at the edge of the Sahara desert. With a refreshed spirit, we embark on a camel trek over the towering dunes of Erg Chebbi, witnessing a breathtaking sunset from atop one of the high dunes. Finally, we reach the heart of the Sahara, where we settle into a desert camp for the night, indulging in a delectable dinner accompanied by traditional Berber music under the mesmerizing starry sky.
Awakening early in the morning is a must to witness the awe-inspiring sunrise over the desert. We then ride our camels back to the hotel, reuniting with our driver. Our westward journey commences with a visit to the city of Rissani, once a prominent trade hub for caravans traveling to and from Morocco and neighboring countries. If it coincides with market days, which take place every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday, we’ll explore the bustling souk, the largest in the region. Continuing onwards, we reach Erfoud, known as the fossils town, before driving through the Atlas Mountains and charming towns en route to the fertile green valley of Todra.
Surrounded by ancient mud villages, we relish a delightful lunch in the town before proceeding to the awe-inspiring Todra Gorges. This dramatic corridor features towering cliffs rising up to 300 meters, with water flowing from natural springs. Later, we venture through the captivating Dades Valley, where we marvel at the remarkable sandcastles and fascinating rock formations known locally as “monkey toes.” Our day concludes as we spend the night in a hotel or riad overlooking the picturesque Dades Valley.
After a hearty breakfast, we set off for Ouarzazate via Boutghrar, Rose Valley, and Skoura. Our journey commences with a visit to the mesmerizing snaky road, renowned for its appearance in numerous car advertisements, and the impressive rock formations of the Dades Gorges. Venturing off-road, we arrive at Boutghrar, a place where nature and vibrant colors converge, allowing us to visit nomads living in caves and enjoy a cup of tea in their company.
Continuing our route, we reach El Kalaa Mgouna. Also known as Rose Town, where locals gather over 400 tons of rose petals used for the production of rosewater, creams, and perfumes in local cooperatives. The town hosts a captivating festival every May. We then savor a delicious lunch in the town before embarking on the road of a thousand kasbahs, leading us to Skoura, home to some of the most exquisite kasbahs in Morocco. Here, we visit the 17th-century Kasbah of Amridil and drive through the oases of Skoura towards Ouarzazate. Where we enjoy dinner and spend the night in a comfortable hotel or riad.
Our day begins with a visit to the renowned cinema studios of Ouarzazate, often referred to as the “Hollywood of Africa.” This city has served as the filming location for numerous movies, including popular titles like Game of Thrones and Prison Break Season 4. Ouarzazate is also famous for its handicrafts, offering a variety of wooden gates, silverware, and rugs.
Continuing our journey, we head to the iconic Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its appearance in international films such as Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Game of Thrones. Our adventure proceeds through the breathtaking Tizi n’Tichka Pass, which reaches an elevation of 2,260 meters and traverses the High Atlas Mountains, granting us captivating views of Berber villages along the way.
